The Baseball Stock Market

A friend of mine compared gambling, more specifically sports bets, to playing the stock market. Giving it a little thought, you need to say he’s right. The stock market is a world of ups and downs where virtual stocks depend on the performance of its mother companies for their value. Sports teams and franchises also depend on the performance of their individual players to keep their value up.

But that’s not where the big parallel between sports bets and the stock market lies. Let’s look at the example of baseball. Baseball betting goes a long way further and is dependent on a lot of extra-match factors. Just like a certain stock can go up or down in value because of news and events surrounding the specific company, most of them not affecting its performance whatsoever, news around baseball also affect, sometimes greatly affect, a team’s performance.

That’s why, just like when you’re betting on the stock market you need to keep an eye on financial news, if you’re betting on baseball you need to keep an eye – sometimes two – on the media circus surrounding the game. A player’s lack – or increase – of performance can be due to a specific increase in his physical shape or game ability, but it can also be due to comments his manager or coach made on the media. Keep all of these factors in mind when considering where to put your betting money and soon you’ll realize that it’s whatever surrounds the game that sometimes makes the difference.
